This article explains how to turn off Netflix subtitles on phones, tablets, streaming devices, game consoles, smart TVs, and web browsers.
Turn Off Netflix Subtitles on a Web Browser
To turn off subtitles in a web browser like Chrome and Edge, hover the cursor over the icon that looks like a dialog box. Select Off under the Subtitles section.
Turn Off Netflix Subtitles on Android
Follow these steps to turn Netflix subtitles off on any Android mobile device.
With a video playing, tap the screen to show the progress bar.
Select Audio & Subtitles.
In the Subtitles section, select Off.
Turn Off Subtitles on iOS
Follow these steps to turn Netflix subtitles off on any iOS mobile device.
With a video playing, tap Audio & Subtitles.
Under Subtitles, select Off.
Select X to return to the video.
Turn Off Subtitles on Google Chromecast
If you use a Google Chromecast to cast Netflix from an Android or iOS device to a television, navigate to the Netflix settings menu on your mobile device and follow the above instructions to turn off subtitles.
Turn Off Subtitles on Apple TV
If you watch Netflix on an Apple TV device, use one of the below methods to access the subtitles settings depending on which version you own.
- For an Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3, hold the center button on the Apple TV remote.
- For an Apple TV 4 or Apple TV 4K, swipe down on the touchpad on the Apple TV remote.
Then, select Off under the Subtitles section.
Turn Off Subtitles on Roku
If you watch Netflix on a Roku device, there are two ways to turn subtitles off.
Under the description page for the video, use the Roku remote to select Audio & Subtitles.
To turn subtitles off after starting the video, select Back on the Roku remote to show the video description page. Or, follow the instructions below.
Under Audio & Subtitles, select Off. Once it’s check-marked, press the Back button to return to the description page and resume play.
Alternatively, if you have a newer Roku model, you can turn subtitles off while a video is playing. Press Up on the remote to access the progress bar and other options.
Use the remote to highlight the Audio & Subtitles icon and press OK.
Select Off under the Subtitles options menu and press OK.
Turn Off Netflix Subtitles on Blu-ray Players, Smart TVs, and Set-Top Boxes
If you watch Netflix on a Blu-ray player, Smart TV, or set-top box, turn off subtitles by using the device’s remote to select the dialog icon. Under Subtitles, select Off.
There are many brands and types of Blu-ray players, Smart TVs, and set-top boxes, so instructions may vary slightly.
Turn Off Subtitles on PlayStation
If you watch Netflix on a PlayStation 3 or 4, turning off subtitles works similarly to a Blu-ray or other device. Navigate to the dialog icon and select Off under the Subtitles section.
Turn Off Subtitles on Xbox
If you watch Netflix on an Xbox 360 or Xbox One, the steps differ compared to the PlayStation. Here’s how to do it.
With a video playing on Netflix, select the Down arrow on the Xbox controller.
Select the dialog icon.
Select the A button to display the Subtitles setting.
Under Subtitles, select Off.
Turn Off Subtitles on Fire TV
If you watch Netflix on an Amazon Fire TV device, follow these steps to turn off subtitles.
Select the Menu button on the Fire TV remote. If you’re casting from a mobile device, select the Menu button on the Fire TV remote app.
Select Turn Captions Off.
Select the Menu button to set the option.
Turn Off Subtitles Using a Browser Extension
If you can’t remove subtitles using the above methods, use a browser extension called Unsubtitle for Netflix. This extension is specific to Google Chrome. Navigate to the extension in the Chrome Web Store and select Add to Chrome. When prompted to confirm the action, select Add extension.
How to Turn Netflix Subtitles Back On
When you want to turn subtitles back on, access the settings through the same instructions provided above. Below Off are the languages Netflix supports for subtitles for a given show or film. These languages include English, French, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Select a language and confirm the option to set the subtitles.
